If you're running MySQL slaves - especially if they're part of different networks - then you can end up with a large proportion of your available bandwidth being clogged up with binlog replication.
To help, you can turn on binlog compression on the Master. We saw about a 90% reduction in bandwidth utilisation after we had turned this on.
